I am a published writer!

And not just on this site that few people ever see! I have started working as an unpaid writer on the News team at a site called MoDaCo. MoDaCo is a website mainly dedicated to Android smartphones, tablets, and other gadgets. I started last month and so far have accumulated almost 1 million hits on the articles I have written. Its an interesting learning curve as my writing up to now has been 100% corporate focused – polished high end training manuals that take months to get written, approved and released. MoDaCo is much more informal and spur of the moment so I have had to adapt dramatically to the new style. Hopefully I will get my first device review soon – I am on the waiting list for a device right now.

Olympics Volunteering – an Update

Well so far, no news. I am still waiting for the elusive email from LOCOG telling me one way or the other about my volunteering offer. In the meantime I have received an email from them telling me that I should not be blogging about the process, nor should I be blogging about my experience during the games. They are expecting people to post their experiences on the official Olympics website instead. Obviously I don’t want to be rocking the boat right now so I will keep my opinions on this to myself!

Hopefully I will find out about the volunteer offer soon, as, even though it’s still a long way off, I want to start sorting out plans for the rest of the summer with my family.

Volunteering at the Olympics – Technology Team

Well the time has almost arrived for me to head into our fair Capital and attend my Olympic Volunteer interview. I have been offered an interview to be part of the ‘Technology Team’ .  The process involves heading to the ExCeL London for registration, a wander around the exhibition and a 30 minute interview. Hopefully I will get an offer for a role in the Team and will be able to use my years of experience in the tech arena to the Olympic events. This is the blurb on the ‘Technology Team’ from the London 2012 site:

Technology

3,000-4,000 generalist Games Makers required

The team will build and operate the technology tools, systems and services needed to plan and run the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Games Makers will be part of a team that ensures a reliable, secure and seamless technology service throughout the Games. Volunteers should work well under pressure and demonstrate excellent attention to detail.

Some Technology volunteers, particularly those in Team Leader and results roles, may be required to attend a Test Event between May 2011 and May 2012.

The highs…

Technology provides the critical timing, scoring and results service, so you’ll be amongst the first to find out the official outcomes of each event and will be responsible for distributing them correctly.

… and possible lows

Roles will be assigned on a shift rotation with potential early morning starts and late evening finishes. Technology locations in the venues are often behind the scenes in operational areas.

Sample Technology roles

Print Distribution Team Leader

Responsibilities and tasks include:

  • managing a team of people to deliver paper copy results to customers within a competition venue;
  • ensuring the results reports are delivered within the allocated time; and
  • preparing daily distribution lists showing all results reports that will be produced during the day and preparing a service report at the end of day.

Skills preferred:

  • IT
  • people management

Venue Technology Team Member

Responsibilities and tasks include:

  • helping the Venue Technology Manager coordinate the implementation and operation of technology services at the venue;
  • coordinating technology tours of the venue for interested parties such as partners, the Olympic/Paralympic Family and future Host Cities; and
  • carrying out administrative tasks and simple installations.

Skills preferred:

  • IT
  • customer services
  • administration

I will update this blog throughout the process.

Yurting in Devon

We have recently returned from a very good holiday down in Devon. We have camped quite often in the past but were looking for something different this year. We opted to book a yurt and join the Glamping (Glamorous camping apparently!) movement.
The site we chose is called Yurtcamp and is situated close to the A38 a few miles from Newton Abbot.

Brisket

While in Sainsburys last week a spotted a rare item on the meat counter – Brisket. It was the first time I had seen it in the supermarket and as it was on special offer at 1/3 off I bought the only piece they had.

On Saturday morning I made a spice rub consisting of cumin, garlic, smoked paprika, molasses, salt, black pepper and oregano (no measurements -its down to personal taste). I rubbed it all over the piece of beef and wrapped it tightly in tin foil and popped it in the fridge.

Sunday morning at 11am I put the meat into the oven at 110C and left it alone for 3 hours before turning the package over and cooking for a further 3 hours.

When the full 6 hours had passed I unwrapped the beef – being careful to catch all the delicious juices – and left it to rest on a warm plate for 20 mins or so.

We ate it with some new potatoes fresh from the garden which were boiled and buttered, and some sauteed cabbage with mustard.

We all cleared our plates, and the kids had seconds. All the cold cuts left were put in the kids sandwiches for school this morning.

Total cost – around £8 for 5 people, plus leftovers – bargain!

New web host

After a period of hosting this site on a very noisy server under my desk in the office, I have decided to move it to an external web host.

I plan to actually use this blog regularly from now on!

Kiwis v BaaBaas 5th Dec

I went to Twickenham to see New Zealand v The Barbarians on 5th Dec.
This is a video of the Kiwis doing the Haka. Unfortunately for my mate Tim a Kiwi) the BaaBaas triumphed for the first time since 1973!
